CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A bill to make it easier to
prosecute pimps and panderers won unanimous support in the
Nevada Senate on Wednesday and now goes to Gov. Kenny Guinn for
final approval.
AB470, dubbed the "anti-pimp bill," removes a
requirement that an act of prostitution or pimping be
corroborated by a third party to prove guilt. If the bill
becomes law, a pimp could be prosecuted based solely on the word
of the prostitute.
The legislation came about because police officers were
frustrated that case screeners for prosecutors rejected attempts
to prosecute pimps because there wasn't any testimony besides
that given by prostitutes. Without the measure, officers'
observations and prostitutes' word would not be enough to lead
to the filing of a complaint.
The measure's supporters have testified that it can protect
prostitutes who are often abused. They say the way the law is
now written, panderers and pimps get a free pass because it's so
difficult to gather other evidence against them, whether from
other prostitutes or johns.
