City of Las Vegas Says, Jail or a Day in 'John School'

Getting arrested for soliciting prostitution is a crime that comes with a big stigma attached. But if you're arrested in the city of Las Vegas, there is a way out.

Welcome to "John School," a no-holds barred class that is designed to literally "scare" offenders about the dangers of prostitution.

Chris Reynolds with the Southern Nevada Health District said, "So, basically what we are going to do here is talk about STDs. How many STDs do you think you could name?"

The eight men in "John School" were all arrested for soliciting prostitution. Reynolds is showing them the potential consequences of their actions.

"Well, the reason I ask how many do you think you could name is because most people can name about eight, six to eight. There are more than 25 sexually transmitted diseases out there," Reynolds tells them.

In graphic photo after graphic photo and in plain, blunt, language, Reynolds tells these men what venereal diseases can do the body. "The sore can be anywhere you come in contact with syphilis. So, I've seen the sore anywhere on or around the penis. I have seen it above the pubic hair, on the mouth. I have seen it on fingers. I actually had one case it was on the top of the man's head."

Some of which can be permanently disfiguring or even fatal.

Reynolds continued, "And every year in the United States, 15 million people become infected with an STD. Half of those people, when they get it, they have it now for the rest of their life."

The goal is to keep these men from ever offending again.

"If you get gonorrhea, chlamydia -- and at the same time you come into contact with someone with HIV while you have that disease -- your chance of getting HIV goes up," Reynolds explained.

Beverly Golson is with the Las Vegas Municipal Court. "Our goal is to reduce recidivism."

Golson supervises the program, which is technically called "alternative sentencing." She says it was designed to stop the revolving door of repeat offenders.

"There have been 1,628 offenders that have gone through these classes. Only three have re-offended," Golson said.

The class is translated into Spanish, so no detail is misunderstood.

Mariza Colon spent 20 years as a prostitute to support a drug habit. "At the age of 14, because I didn't know how to work, there was only one thing I could do, and was to prostitute on the streets."

In detail, she explained what the willingness of men like these does to women like her. "The addiction grew from marijuana to acid to cocaine and it escalated to the point where I became into heroin addiction," she said.

And how men like these have changed her life forever. "Because you see my concept of who men were in my life had been distorted. I tried to get married and had two other sons, but I could not get my relationship going. I just, there was that part of intimacy that I just could not relate with."

The "John School" is limited to first time offenders and only those actually arrested in the city of Las Vegas. It costs $450.

Once the "johns" complete the class, their solicitation charges are reduced to a misdemeanor such as jaywalking. Their records will also be permanently sealed.

None of the "johns" were willing to be interviewed on camera. One told the I-Team he thought the cost was high but worth it because he will not have to go through life with a solicitation charge on his record.
