Prostitution is going nowhere, so put it somewhere

Column, Nov. 11.

I'm a former Toronto resident who now lives in New Zealand. New Zealand legalized prostitution several years ago.

Since then, it appears legalizing prostitution empowered the women in "the oldest profession." Brothels are subject to municipal zoning laws. Sex workers now have the same workplace rights as any other workers. They no longer have to fear blackmail from brothel owners or prosecution. They do a job. They pay their taxes. They practise safe sex. The sky didn't fall when prostitution was legalized in New Zealand. Sex workers and their customers are now safer than they ever have been.
