The Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee has moved ahead
with a plan to tax adult entertainment in Nevada.
The bill, forwarded to Assembly Ways and Means for further
action, is aimed at cleaning up the tax on live entertainment
that passed in 2003.
Lawmakers agreed that the hastily written 2003 bill needs
some work.
Most strip clubs were exempted from the 10 percent
admission fee tax. Senate Dina Titus say other parts of the
2003 bill have led to a, "bookkeeping
nightmare" for many entertainers.
Titus' proposal removes an exemption for venues that have
fewer than 300 seats. It adds an exemption for sporting
events, and specifically targets adult entertainment.
A tax on brothels was removed from the bill in the Senate.
Commerce and Labor Chairwoman Barbara Buckley says she
expects the bill will be rewritten to avoid possible
constitutional issues.
